If it's not big, it's hot in Texas. You got your hot jalapeños, hot chili, hot BBQ, hot salsa. And of course, the mother of them all, the heat in July, when it's just plain sizzling outside. But we kinda like it that way. Besides, there's a reason they invented the frozen margarita.
Since it's almost impossible to ignore, we decided to dedicate this issue of EP to all things hot—and a few that are decidedly not. Whether it's Austin's hot new music and entertainment network, making the most of working with interns, or just what keeps Martians cool, you'll find it all here. We hope you really enjoy this month's EP!
Cheers!

One thing that's always hot in Austin (besides the weather) is the entertainment scene. With tons of legendary music venues, talented musicians and global events like SXSW and the Austin City Limits music festivals, our city really supports and inspires artists of all ages and backgrounds. No wonder Austin has earned the reputation as "The Live Music Capital of the World."
Over the last few years, the city has built on that reputation to support entertainment of all types, including film, fine arts, ballet, award-winning restaurants and, of course, musicians playing at the hottest venues in Austin.
In that spirit, we recently began working with a local company called ME "Music and Entertainment" Television. ME is a network dedicated to showcasing the great live music and vibrant entertainment scenes in Austin. It offers behind-the-scenes interviews, local live music shows, videos, biographies, event recommendations and venue schedules. And ME delivers extensive reporting on music events followed around the world.
It's where music fans go 24 hours a day to discover up-and-coming artists and get in-depth information on established and touring musicians from different genres. Basically, if it makes Austin unique, ME takes you there.
Want to know what's hot this week? Check it out.

How do we keep cool when it's so freaking hot? Well, how does a pool party sound? Maybe a little game of Pin the Martini on the Martian? Or a summer houseboat bash? At SicolaMartin, we've got a whole team dedicated to coming up with all kinds of cool ideas like those.
The People Team, a lively group of Martians from across the agency, helps keep morale high, the creative fresh and SicolaMartin one fun place to work. Every month, our People Team plans something that's sure to amuse, like chili cook-offs, ice cream parties or an evening out at the old ballpark.

Well, it's officially summer. That means a fresh crop of college graduates are now looking for that perfect job. And the most important thing on his or her resume is an internship. Without one, the chances are slim they'll land that coveted position.
Maybe they'll get lucky—like I did—skip the whole process and get hired wherever they interned. As a mentor, it's interesting to interact with interns today—I clearly remember what it was like. People who I'm now very comfortable with seemed like unapproachable celebrities. Also, I sometimes find myself making judgments on interns for certain things...probably many of the same things I did during my internship.
The most difficult thing as a mentor is finding the time to spend with interns. Although we're all extremely busy, the time and effort a mentor invests early on pays off by producing a strong intern in the long run.
One thing I know for sure is that on both sides, intern and mentor, what the intern and the company get out of an internship is completely dependent on what gets put into the experience. For those just entering the work world, what better way to get a first-hand feel for the type of profession under consideration. School is one thing, but it will never substitute for hands-on experience. And, as professionals grow in their careers, it only makes sense to share their learning with those who are more junior. As with most of life, the more you give, the more you receive.
