Social Media Hype-Fest

Twitter Twitter everywhere...

Let me establish right off the bat that I’m not trying to argue the importance of social media. But what I will argue is that, with the deluge of digital outlets, it’s more important than ever that companies have a strategy to push content into these online properties. If you buy into the hype, you’ll wind up simply fragmenting your message in multiple places, only to be lost in the homogeneous land of web static.

The strategy we favor at SicolaMartin is to use and/or develop tools to push our web content out to the various social media outlets from one central hub — in our case, our website. Make your website the cornerstone of your online presence. Instead of constantly tweeting, microblog on your site and push this content out to the Twitters and Facebooks of the world. Write articles that are indexed not only on your site search, but also by the roaming army of search bots, all which source from yourdomain.com — not scattered about on six different sites.

I’d like to see the next generation of web apps be open source, live locally and allow people to keep ownership of their published content and distribute it in ways they see fit. This is already happening with many open source CMS’s (WordPress and Moveable Type, for example). I’d love to see it continue with these smaller, “widgetized” web apps that a company can easily install and integrate on their own site. Instead of going to Twitter to microblog, people could do it from their own site, even via PDA or cell phone, and that app will push that content out to the social media platforms of their choosing.

A prediction: far off into the future (say, 6 months from now) when the next hot Web 3.0 app arises, your content will still reside on your local database, happily willing to be fed to the new beasts.
