Well, it’s officially summer. That means a fresh crop of college graduates are now looking for that perfect job. And the most important thing on his or her resume is an internship. Without one, the chances are slim they’ll land that coveted position.
Maybe they’ll get lucky—like I did—skip the whole process and get hired wherever they interned. As a mentor, it’s interesting to interact with interns today—I clearly remember what it was like. People who I’m now very comfortable with seemed like unapproachable celebrities. Also, I sometimes find myself making judgments on interns for certain things…probably many of the same things I did during my internship.
The most difficult thing as a mentor is finding the time to spend with interns. Although we’re all extremely busy, the time and effort a mentor invests early on pays off by producing a strong intern in the long run.
One thing I know for sure is that on both sides, intern and mentor, what the intern and the company get out of an internship is completely dependent on what gets put into the experience. For those just entering the work world, what better way to get a first-hand feel for the type of profession under consideration. School is one thing, but it will never substitute for hands-on experience. And, as professionals grow in their careers, it only makes sense to share their learning with those who are more junior. As with most of life, the more you give, the more you receive.
